About Sam Baker, IT Consultant

Professional Background
Degree in journalism (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 1987). Worked in teaching, sales, marketing, quality assurance, human resources, legal support, IT services, and small business operations.

Computer certifications include A+, Network+, Microsoft Windows Professional, Excel Specialist. Continuously studying computer technology - I am currently learning javascript and cloud-based programming.

My favorite aspects of IT work is making components work together (software, hardware, network devices), solving problems to improve system performance, and simplifying unnecessary complexity. I love leaving a client smiling and delivering a sense of relief.

I’m interested in opportunities to work in the “green economy” and with sustainability-related projects, specifically in making modern island living more sustainable. I may like to earn master’s degree in business/technology.

e-Dream
: e-waste dumpsters at all major transfer stations on Hawaii Island, with waste processed on-island to reclaim re-usable and/or re-sellable material, so minimal amount of material is sent to the mainland. Please contact me if you have any ideas about implementing this concept.

Personal Stuff
I have lived in China and France, played college soccer until sidelined with knee injury, and worked on a cattle ranch. I am married with two adopted daughters, into meditation/yoga/mind-body health, love living on the Big Island, and have two shepherd-mix dogs and one cat.

I like hiking, playing in the ocean (paddle boarding, snorkeling, boogie boarding), listening to a variety of music (hard rock, reggae, country, new age), fiddling around on the guitar, reading (magazines, novels, non fiction), watching martial arts and espionage movies.

So far I've been to Oahu, Kaua’i, and Maui, and I hope to visit Lanai and Moloka’i soon - perhaps on business? I hope to travel to Alaska, the Himalayas, and see more of Europe some day.

I aspire to live a more simple, sustainable life with fewer possessions.

A favorite quote: "The Buddha resides quite as comfortably in the circuits of a digital computer... as he does at the top of a mountain or in the petals of a flower." Robert Pirsig
